International connection in LAX?

I am thinking about flying into the newly opened Tokyo-Haneda airport from LAX. Does anyone know how it works to connect in LAX to an international destination? I'm flying in from ATL and have options on either taking 7pm flight or 11pm flight. That would give me 4 hour or 55 mins layover. I am kind of nervous about only having 55 mins to connect but 4 hours seems too long. If conneting in LAX is easy I would rather take the later flight so if anyone knows what I will have to go through to connect in LAX on Delta to Delta please give me the 411! Thanks in advance.
