Why do we have to tip?

We don't have to tip. I think the practice is a complete anochronism and dates back to Victorian times when people were so badly paid and exploited they were rewarded by their rich customers we took pity on them. Nowadays why should we, for example, tip taxi drivers? In London the fares are very expensive to begin with. What extra service to we get from cab drivers to warrant paying a tip? It's time tipping was outlawed. It's not done much in Europe and not expected by those providing the service. So there are some good ideas coming out of Europe!
