What are CFCs?

The answer "D" says what CFCs do, but does not answer the question of what they are. The letters stand for chloro-fluro-carbons. It is a chemical compound which was once widely used as the propellant in spray cans and refrigerants. It's use is now either banned or restricted in most first world countries.
